Cora Sophia Carolfi, 97, previously of Stratford, went to her heavenly reward on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at her Safe Haven Senior Care residence, Marshfield. Cora (Kuse) Carolfi was born July 19, 1925, in the town of Day, Marathon County, to Richard and Louise (Buhrow) Kuse. She grew up on a farm and attended Sunshine School through 8th grade. Later in life, she obtained her GED and graduated with her step-granddaughter with the 1981 class of Stratford High School, receiving both her diploma and a class ring, her proudest possession. Cora worked several factory jobs prior to her marriage.
Cora was united in marriage to Albert Carolfi on June 28, 1944, in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Auburndale, where she was previously baptized and confirmed. Together they raised 5 children. They purchased the Carolfi family farm, where she happily remained a farmer’s wife until their retirement. They built a house on farm land on the Eau Pleine Flowage. After retiring, Cora pursued a job at the Belvedere Supper Club, cooking and baking, a job she thoroughly enjoyed.
On September 17, 1954, Cora and Albert became members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stratford, where they remained members. Cora was an active member of the Ladies’ Aid, and served as treasurer for many years. This church served as their family’s spiritual hub, where their children were raised; baptized, confirmed, and some were married and are buried.
Cora loved her flowers, gardening, baking, and playing cards. She was amazing at doing embroidery, and made many dishtowels and pillowcases. Recently, she re-introduced her granddaughter and taught her great granddaughter this generational art.
Cora was a life-long member of the Stratford Ladies Auxiliary VFW.
Surviving Cora are her children: Gary (Peggy) Carolfi, Homassa, FL; Sandra (Monte) Sorensen, Kronenwetter, WI; and Brian Carolfi, Trempealeau, WI; daughter-in-law, Lola Carolfi, Stratford; and son-in-law, Timothy Smieja, Galesville; 11 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alice Hanson, Hewitt, WI.
Preceding Cora in death are her husband, Albert; her children: Richard Carolfi; Judith Smieja; grandson, Richard A Carolfi Jr.; brothers, Richard, Harry, Daniel, Marvin and Harold Kuse; sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Wiersig, Mabel Leick; and half-sister, Gladys Schneider; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, 2022, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church (113840 Elm Tree Rd., Marshfield). The Rev. Paul Vander Galien, with the assistance of the Rev. Wayne Oblender, will officiate. Private burial will take place in Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
