Dr. Thomas Olsen Obituary

Dr. Thomas W. Olsen, age 85, of Appleton, WI, passed away on February 27th, 2024. A visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on March 8th, 2024 at Faith Lutheran Church in Marshfield, WI, with a memorial service to follow. Pastor Heather Brown will officiate and Kathy Biederwolf will be the organist. Tom, the oldest of four children, was born on October 7, 1938 to Raymond and Helen (Worden) Olsen in Racine, WI.  He attended local schools, graduating from Washinton Park High School, Racine, WI in 1956.  Tom completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Racine and Marquette University and graduated from Marquette University School of Dentistry in 1963.  He completed a one-year dental internship at Evanston Hospital, Evanston, IL and a second post graduate year at Loyola University College of Dental Surgery, Chicago, IL.  He then attended and graduated from the oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA in 1967.

Tom established the Oral Surgery department at the Marshfield Clinic in 1967.  He soon met and married the love of his life, the late Karen May Hunter on December 26, 1970 at Peace Lutheran church in Antigo, WI. While in Marshfield, he served as Secretary-treasurer, Vice President, and President of the Wood County Dental Society.  He also served as Vice-president of Big Brothers of Marshfield.

After practicing at the Marshfield clinic for 17 years, Tom decided to start a solo practice in Rhinelander, WI where he could increase the time he spent with patients.  He ran a very successful practice where patients traveled far distances to see him.  He truly treasured taking care of his patients and serving his community.  He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Rhinelander, WI and was a member of Rotary Club both in Marshfield and Rhinelander.  Tom’s favorite past time in Rhinelander was supporting his children by attending musical concerts and athletic competitions.  Tom practiced oral surgery in Rhinelander from 1984 to 2003, at which time he sold his practice to a respected colleague.  He continued to work part time for five more years, assisting other regional oral surgeons on challenging cases which required two surgeons.  Once he fully retired, he and his wife moved back to Marshfield, WI. They joined Faith Lutheran Church, where they reconnected with long-time friends.  In 2021, he and his wife moved to Appleton, WI to be closer to their eldest daughter.

Tom enjoyed spending time with family and friends.  He valued honesty, kindness, and gentleness, and his family and friends can attest to how he embodied these values in his thoughts and actions.

Tom is survived by daughters Kristin M. Olsen of Appleton and Dr. Kathryn M Olsen of Denver, Colorado, son Dr. Peter (Angela) Olsen of Jacksonville, Florida and grandchildren Ella Kristin Olsen and Samuel Thomas Olsen of Jacksonville, Florida.
