Gary Bjergo Obituary

Gary LeRoy Bjergo, age 80, of Minneapolis, MN, passed away peacefully early Monday, June 30th, 2025, with family by his side in Marshfield, WI. A Funeral will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 8th at Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home, 1010 East Veterans Parkway in Marshfield, WI. Visitation will be held at the same location one hour prior to service on Tuesday at 10:00 AM.

Gary was born December 1, 1944, the son of Leonard Bjergo and Dorothy Swanson in Minneapolis, MN. He graduated from South High School in 1963, where he starred on the Men’s Gymnastics Team. Gary proudly served our Nation in the United States Marine Corps for three years. Upon his return, Gary enrolled in the Minneapolis Police Academy, and officially joined the Minneapolis Police Force on August 19, 1968. He completed his 30-year career with MPD in 1998, during which time he served and protected the streets of Minneapolis with honor. In 1979, the City of Minneapolis created a specialized Accident Investigation Unit, also known as the Traffic Division, where Gary became one of its inaugural service officers.

On July 17, 1969, Gary married Sandra Broms in Watertown, SD, and they returned to build their life together in the outer Minneapolis suburbs. Together, they raised their son, Reed, and daughter, Angelyn.

Gary was so committed to his service work that he went on to serve 10 additional years for the Roberts Police Department after retiring from the Minneapolis PD. Gary also worked as a firearms training instructor for many years.

In his spare time, Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing the guitar. He especially enjoyed deer hunting. Those who knew Gary best will miss his sense of humor, his love for western movies and country music, and his contagious laugh.

Gary is lovingly survived by his children: Reed (Melissa) Bjergo of Inver Grove Heights, MN, and Angelyn (Rick) Lease of Marshfield, WI. He is further survived by five grandchildren: Katelyn (Alex) Wegner, Alayna (Alex) Zaboj, Jordan Jaeckels, Jenna Bjergo, and Adam Lease; as well as three step-grandchildren: Kaitlyn (Ryan) Swanson, Christian Timmins, and Jordan Timmins.

We would like to thank Wells Nature View for taking such good care of Gary for the last 12 years through his extended and challenging battle with Dementia. A heartfelt thank you to St. Croix Hospice, with special appreciation to Breanna Schuld for her exceptional compassion and generosity. Your care meant the world during this difficult time. Gary will be deeply missed.
