Gary R. Thompson, 80, Spencer, passed away on Sunday, September 12, 2021, at Marshfield Medical Center.
Gary was born on March 6, 1941, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Marvin and Mildred (Hovland) Thompson and was a graduate of Southern School of Agriculture in Waseca, Minnesota. He married Randalyn R. Nagel on September 23, 1962.
Gary enjoyed growing up on a farm and he and Randi farmed in Wisconsin until 1988. After that time, the family moved to Spencer and Gary continued employment at Meyer Manufacturing until his retirement in 2013.
He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Spencer where he enjoyed singing in the choir. Gary had a passion for music and enjoyed yard work, western movies, traveling and spending time with his family and friends. He was a people person and could strike up a conversation with any stranger sharing stories and telling jokes. His daily ritual included morning coffee with “the guys.”
He is survived by his wife, Randi; son, Greg (Gigi) of Las Vegas, NV; daughter, Monica (Gaylord) Mancl of Janesville, WI; and son, Darin of Spencer, WI. He is further survived by his brother, Larry (Joann) in Winnipeg, Canada; sisters, Marlene (Loren) Fritz of Mound, MN, Gloria (Bob) Klinger of Bemidji, MN, and Julie Knauss of Rochester, MN. Also, he is survived by his daughter-in-law, Bonnie Baerwald of Fond du Lac, WI; and his granddaughter and grandson, Jessica Mancl of Omaha, NE, and Mathew Mancl of Janesville, WI; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and daughter, Lisa.

The memorial service for Gary will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Spencer. Pastor Tim Hinrichs will officiate. Burial will take place in the North Spencer Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home is assisting the family.
