James David Asplin, 83, of Marshfield, WI passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at the House of the Dove under the care of Compassus Hospice in Marshfield, WI. Jim died after a courageous battle of many years with PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy). He joined his beloved pet, Charlie Jr, who passed away just 17 days prior.
James was born on June 26, 1942 in Durand, WI to Herbert and Stella Asplin. He graduated from Marshfield Senior High. He was married to Mary Schmidt on September 14, 1963 at St. Johns Catholic Church and again on September 14, 2016. They are current members of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Jim worked at Marshfield Wilbert Vault Company for 37 years.
Jim was known for his adventurous nature. This included white water rafting, sky diving, bungee jumping, hot air ballooning, parasailing, helicopter touring, and motorcycling. He also had his Ham Radio License, was a member of the Auxiliary Police, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Knights. After retirement, his favorite past-time was going to polka dances throughout the state. He was most proud of his founding of the Polka Potpourri dance show that he started in 2007 and was later named Lights, Camera, Polka under the direction of Mary. Both of which are still playing on Marshfield Broadcasting Public Access TV and the surrounding area for the past 19 years. Over the years they have produced and edited over 1,000 shows, with the more recent help of Dan Jirovec and Evans Benz. The shows have also been syndicated throughout the United States.
He is survived by his spouse Mary; children David (Karen) Asplin of Marshfield, Catherine (Peter) Lotzer of Marshfield, Brian (Janet) Asplin of Stevens Point; grandchildren Nicholas (Brittany) Lotzer of Marshfield, Christopher (Ashlyn) Lotzer of Marshfield, Taylor (Lance) Willson of Marshfield, Jenna Asplin of Plover, Jason Lundquist of Plover, and Jeremy Lundquist of Las Vegas, NV; great-grandchildren Gavin, Emmett, and Finnley Lotzer of Marshfield, Wesley and Adeline Willson of Marshfield; Sisters Karen Richardson of Albuquerque, NM and Mary Ann Nysted of Fort Atkinson, WI. Sister-in-law Anna (Sissy) Foss of Marshfield. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who loving called him Uncle Jim.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Kirk (Katie) Asplin and Keith (Jo) Asplin, sister Lynn Wenzel, and brothers-in-law Len Belinski, Rich Richardson, and Ken Nysted.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 23, 2026 at Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home at 1010 East Veterans Parkway in Marshfield, WI. Visitation to be held at 9:00 am beginning with a Rosary with a Fourth Degree Honor Guard by the Knights of Columbus during the visitation. A Catholic service with Deacon Ray Draeger will begin at 11:00 am with a luncheon following. A private cemetery service for the family will be held.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the House of the Dove in Marshfield, WI or Marshfield Area Respite Care Center.
The family would like to thank Compassus Hospice, House of the Dove, and Marshfield Area Respite Care Center held at Wesley United Methodist Church for their loving care of Jim for the months leading up to his death.
