He was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to Russell and Helen Mary Bennington and was the eldest of eight children. Following his graduation from high school, Jerry enlisted in the United States Army, serving as a medic primarily with U.S. Army Europe 225th STA Hospital, where he was involved in the 1961 Berlin Crisis.

After completing his military service, he attended the University of Wisconsin–Superior, earning a degree in Medical Technology. In November of 1972, he married Patricia (Lukas) in Elgin, Illinois. They later moved to Marshfield, Wisconsin, where they raised their four kids and intermittently took in several foster children.

Jerry dedicated 38 years of service to the Marshfield Clinic, where he worked as a laboratory technology consultant. He also served as President of the American Medical Technologists and earned his Master of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh.

Deeply committed to his community, Jerry served as the 5th District Alderman and was an active member of the American Legion Post 54, the Knights of Columbus, and AARP Advocate.

In his spare time, Jerry enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his dogs, as well as pursuing his interests in coin and stamp collecting, boating, and computers.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Tom and Rusty; and his son, Brian.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his children: John (Susan) Bennington of Brighton, Michigan, Celeste (Tim) Jackson of Medford, Wisconsin, Nate (Raquel) Bennington of Marshfield, Wisconsin, Jerry (Jennifer) Bennington Jr. of Aledo, Texas.

Further survived by his brothers: Randy (Pamela) Bennington of Inman, South Carolina, Steve (Lori) Bennington of North Wales, Pennsylvania, Tim (Mary) Bennington of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Todd (Arla) Bennington of Salem, South Carolina; his sister, Anne (Dan) Maples of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania; as well as nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
