Joyce Alvina Engel

Joyce Alvina Engel, age 96, of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Wednesday, June 28, 2023. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, July 8, 2023 at Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home (1010 East Veterans Parkway) in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM on July 8, 2023. Burial will take place at Ebenezer United Church of Christ, 213055 County Road M, Stratford, Wisconsin 54484.

Joyce was born April 20, 1927, the daughter of Otto and Johanna Gust. She graduated in 1944 from Stratford High School in Stratford, Wisconsin. Then she furthered her education and completed one year of Normal School in Wisconsin Rapids. On July 9, 1945, Joyce was united in marriage to the love of her life Frederick (Fritz) Joseph Engel at Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Stratford, Wisconsin until the time of his death on April 6, 1976.

Joyce was employed full-time by Weyerhaeuser for 33 years. After her retirement in 1990, Joyce moved from Marshfield to Rice Lake to live with her son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Millie and helped raise their family. She resided there until the time of her death.

Joyce was active by daily walking (especially around Hiawatha Park in Rice Lake), avid reading, knitting, crocheting, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and board/dice games. Watching Wheel of Fortune was rarely missed. She lived for her family and loved baking. She was known for her chocolate chip cookies and scotcheroos. She enjoyed gardening, canning, berry picking, and campfires.

Joyce was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Rice Lake and was devoted to daily Bible reading and reflection.

Joyce is lovingly survived by her children June Jakobi - Hewitt, WI, James (Irene) Engel - Pittsville, WI, William (Nancy) Engel - Stratford, WI, Glenn (Judy) Engel - New Lisbon, WI, Kenneth (Millie) Engel - Rice Lake, Patti Engel - Milliken, CO, Richard (Julie) Engel - Hewitt, WI, and Ron (Lori) Engel - Fond du Lac, WI; 19 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren; two sisters Phyllis Knutson - New Berlin, WI, and Edie Achee - Phoenix, AZ, and brother Walter (Pat) Gust - Wauwatosa, WI, as well as, many nieces and nephews.

Joyce is preceded in death by her husband, son Frederick Joseph Engel, Jr., son-in-law Larry Jakobi, grandsons Dale Henschen and Matthew Bader, her parents and parents-in-law, three brothers Edmund (Gertie) Gust, William (Irene) Gust, Otto (Peggy) Gust Jr., three sisters Goldie (John) Stick, Marjorie (Larry) Toelle, Helen (Alvin) Kratzer and many brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws.
