Kenneth was born June 22, 1932, the son of Edgar and Fern (Dickensen) Shong in Augusta, Wisconsin. He graduated from Augusta High School in 1950 and went on to attend the University of Wisconsin – River Falls where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture Education. In 1957, Ken was united in marriage to his wife Joan Ellingson to whom he was a devoted husband and life partner for over 60 years. Ken also served as a medical specialist in the US Army.
In 1965, Ken and Joan transferred to Marshfield, Wisconsin with Cenex and two years later purchased a local real estate business from Lee Dix. Ken went on to form Shong Realty, expanding his business as a master ERA franchise operator across five states. For over 40+ years, Ken never lost his passion to help families young and old find and purchase their family homes.
In 1984, Ken purchased a cranberry marsh in Spooner, Wisconsin and formed Midwest Cranberries together with business partner, Warner Von Holzen. Ken and Warner operated the marsh for over 21 years. Throughout his life, Ken also enjoyed a close personal and professional friendship with Bob Friedrichsen.
While building his real estate business, Ken was active in numerous local civic organizations including Elks, Shriners, Wisconsin State Realtors Board and the National Association of Realtors. In 1978, Ken was named Marshfield Realtor of the Year. Ken also served on the Wood County Board and was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church throughout his life.
In Ken’s spare time he enjoyed golfing and the great outdoors including elk hunting and trout fishing in Montana with his brother Wayne. Ken was also an avid private pilot and instilled his love of adventure and travel with his family. A devoted family man, Ken enjoyed traveling with Joan and nurturing their extensive network of friends as well as visiting and spending time with his three daughters. An excellent bridge player, a favorite family activity and holiday ritual was teaching and playing various card games including “duck” with all his grandchildren.
Ken is lovingly survived by his wife, Joan; children Tami McLaughlin (Jeff McLaughlin) of Appleton, Wisconsin, Fay Shong (Tracy Mehr) of Glen Ellyn, Illinois and Kendra Haessly (Brad Haessly) of Marshfield, Wisconsin.
