Steven Craig Wehling, age 70, of Auburndale, WI formerly of Dorchester and Stanley passed away peacefully Saturday morning, January 6th, 2024, after a six year hard fought battle against cancer.
Steve was born on October 31, 1953, to the late Erwin and LaDora (Freudenberg) Wehling. The oldest of five children, he grew up in Sumner, IA on the family dairy farm where his love for animals and farming first began.
In the early 1980’s Steve settled on a dairy farm near Stanley, WI where he continued to raise a family. On Friday nights after chores were finished, he showed movies at the Stanley Theater for many years. He also spent years working part time at the local Post Office while continuing to farm. After leaving the post office and selling the cows, he began working exclusively at Weathershield. Later moving to a small farm in Dorchester he continued working at Weathershield making wood and vinyl products. His horse herd continued growing, joining many small animals. In 2016 Steve met Leona York who shared his love of animals and farming. In 2017 they began a life together on a hobby farm near Auburndale, WI where they continued raising horses and other small animals. In 2018 Steve was forced into an early retirement due to his health. He spent his final years at his Auburndale hobby farm doing what he loved.
Steve will always be remembered for his Big Ideas and the way that he wanted to take something and convert it into something else. Words that described him best were definitely stubborn, kind-hearted and hard-working. Steve had a soft spot for all types of animals which he raised throughout the years, with horses being his favorite! Steve enjoyed sharing his love of animals with his children and grandchildren. He loved woodworking, crafting furniture, building trailers, wagons and outbuildings for himself and others. Steve enjoyed time spent on auctions, where he could find a deal. We will always imagine him saying “I found this for sale” one more time. We could not have asked for a better Dad, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa and will miss him every day.
He will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him. Steve was preceded in death by his parents Erwin and LaDora Wehling, Brother-in-law and Best Friend Mike Stangle, Nephew Brandon Buls. He is survived by his 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Daughter Michelle (Dan) Harrigan, Kai/Amelia and Nevan. Daughter Crystal (Justin) Fox, Rachel (Andy) and Rowan, Lorna (Joey), Trinity. Son Joe (Cora) Wehling, Mariah and Ian.
Significant other Leona York. Siblings Larry (Rhonda) Wehling, Randy (April) Wehling both of Sumner, IA. Lori (Mike) Turner of Moline, IL and Cheryl (Merle) Buls of Andover, MN.
He is also remembered by extended family, nieces, nephews and friends.
A visitation will be held on Monday, January 15, 2024 from 1-4pm at Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home 1010 E Veterans Pkwy, Marshfield, WI 54449.
